About Jennifer

Welcome! I’m Jennifer and I am so glad you are here. A little about me: I am first and foremost the mother of five amazing children. I am a women’s health enthusiast and an enthusiast for supporting those who need it most. I have a Masters degree in Complementary Alternative Medicine and focus in Aromatherapy in addition to training and certification in birth and postpartum care as a Doula. I love being in these two fields and have found combining the two to be so beneficial to many people that I have served. I’ve discovered that support during the four trimesters of pregnancy has been linked to better birth outcomes, lower depression rates, and overall satisfaction in the transition to parenthood.

I created Bee Humble Beginnings, LLC (now Humble Bee Aromatherapy and Doula Services) to help provide care for new parents, whether this is the first baby or the fifth. Adopted or fostered, LGBTQ families, single parent family, grandparent family, nuclear family, and extended family, we are here to serve and help you adjust to your growing family. Support when you need it in all four trimesters. We tailor to your individual needs in a nonjudgmental, accepting environment! We understand the demand of caring for a new baby, daily household responsibilities and juggling the transition to your new addition.

So... What's a Doula?

So, what is the history of Doulas? Even though many people are just hearing about doulas, we have been around for many years! Historically, the role of the doula came about from ancient times when women gave birth at home. While these women often had a midwife present during childbirth, they also had the support of female family members and friends to provide support during the birthing process. Doulas became more popular in the 60's and 70's. In 1969, Dana Raphael was credited for coining the term Doula (after the Greek word meaning "female servant.") Doulas are female attendants, that help guide mothers during and after childbirth.

What do Doulas do?

To tell you what a Doula does can be a little difficult because many doulas offer different services. For us, as Birth Doulas, we support you emotionally and physically during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and in the postpartum period. Some of these services during the pregnancy period include in person meetings, unlimited text, email, and phone support for questions about what's happening during pregnancy, what is normal, what is not, and when you should seek help from your provider. During labor and delivery, doulas can help support you by giving you encouragement, using affirmations, providing physical comfort measures such as massage, counter pressure, and encouraging the use of different positions to help baby move down the birth canal. Postpartum doulas can offer support to new parents by being there to care for baby overnight so parents can rest, helping prepare meals, and helping with light household tasks. We can provide educational support on things from how to swaddle baby and best sleep practices to safely installing car seats or referrals to local resources. Doulas can be an invaluable resource and support.

Doulas Do Not...

So, we've mentioned some pretty great things that Doulas do BUT what do we not do? Doulas do not offer medical advice, perform clinical tasks or make decisions for you. We do not "catch baby's" and we do not deliver babies. We can and will help you advocate for yourself and we can help provide knowledge for things that are typically "normal" and what to look out for but we encourage you to seek advice from a medical professional for any kind of medical or clinical questions or concerns.
